Maine defeats Rhode Island, New England Champion is headed to Williamsport, Pa. for the Little League World Series

Bristol, CT- Game Summary - Three games ago, Maine was trying to figure out if they would remain in the tournament. A big win over Rhode Island, an upset of undefeated Connecticut, and a second defeat of Rhode Island has the team from Westbrook, Maine heading to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania beginning August 19th. Today's 7 - 2 victory over Cranston, Rhode Island makes a dream come true for the team from Westbrook. Looking back at the way Maine finished the tournament, maybe they DID read the script!

Westbrook, picked up a quick run in the top of the first on a lead off double by Thomas Lemay and a RBI double by Zack Collett. Cranston, matched Maine with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a walk to Peter Parrella IV, an uncharacteristic error by Maine, and a RBI single by Chris Di Stefano. Maine got right back to work and took the lead 2 - 1 in the top of the second on a walk to Michael Mowatt. A wild pitch and a passed ball got him to third and Mike Boothby got the first of his 4 RBI's with a single to left. Nick Finocchiaro, starting and winning pitcher for Maine, then held Rhode Island in the bottom of the inning.

Then Maine had their big rally. With one out, Zack Collet reached on an error, Finocchiaro and Mitchell Chipman followed with singles, Chipman's driving in the third run. After a strikeout for the second out, Jacob Gardiner hit an RBI single to center raising the score to 4 - 1. Not to be outdone, number 8 hitter, Mike Boothby stepped up and had the biggest hit of his Little League career as he cracked a 3 run homerun over the fence in left center for a commanding 7 - 1 Maine lead. Rhode Island was able to pick up a run in the bottom half of the third on a Parrella walk and singles by Michael Hayden and Nicholas Mattiello, but that was all they would get.

Finocchiaro pitched a fine game as he defeated Rhode Island for the second time in the tournament. He had 9 strikeouts and 4 walks, but gave up only 3 hits, retiring the last 8 hitters he faced.

Maine will play on Saturday, August 20th at 11:00 am against the Southwest region winner on Volunteer Stadium in the 2005 Little League World Series.
